    Explore the universe through the lens of Modeling Instruction in this hybrid online professional development workshop designed for middle school, high school, and introductory college physics and astronomy educators. Participants will engage in the Modeling cycle as learners while exploring research-based instructional strategies, classroom activities, and assessment techniques that promote conceptual understanding and scientific inquiry.

    The workshop will meet weekly via Zoom from September 1st through December 8th on Tuesday evenings (7-10 PM Eastern, 6-9 PM Central, 5-8 MT, 4-7 PT), providing opportunities for collaboration with teachers from across the country while allowing participants to immediately implement Modeling strategies in their own classrooms.

    Workshop participants may choose from multiple professional development options:

    • AMTA Workshop Only – Participate in the workshop as a professional learning experience.
    • University of the Pacific Graduate (UoP) Credit – Earn graduate credit through AMTA's long-standing partnership with the University of the Pacific. 2 UoP credit hours at a rate of: $79 / credit. Contact engage@modelinginstruction.org
    • University of Nebraska Omaha Graduate Credit – Participants may also choose to enroll in PHYS 8320 – Modeling Instruction in Astronomy and earn 3 graduate credits through the University of Nebraska Omaha. This graduate course extends the workshop experience through additional readings, reflective assignments, and curriculum development activities delivered through UNO's Canvas learning management system.
      • UNO offers a reduced Omaha Urban Rate (OUR) to residents of a number of states.
      • Current online graduate tuition rates are:
        • Nebraska Resident: $421/credit
        • Omaha Urban Rate (OUR): $632/credit
        • Non-Resident: $890/credit
      • The OUR rate applies to residents of Colorado, Kansas, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
      • For our 3-credit course, that works out to approximately:

        • OUR: $1,896
        • Non-Resident: $2,670

    PHYS 8320 is one of the foundational courses in UNO's new Graduate Certificate in Physics Education, an 18-credit program designed to help science teachers earn graduate credits in physics while strengthening their content knowledge and pedagogical skills. The certificate is intended to support teachers seeking Dual Enrollment qualifications while providing meaningful, classroom-focused professional development.     Designed for educators across disciplines, you’ll experience firsthand how storyline development, whiteboard discussions, and guided questioning foster deep student understanding.

    Note: this workshop meets in the Central European Time Zone

    DATES:  Wednesdays, September 23 – December 2, 2026 (10 weeks of classes) –Fall 2026 (SEM 1); No class on Oct 7th

    TIME: Wednesdays, 7:00–10:00 PM, Host site: Switzerland — Central European Summer Time (CEST, UTC+2) through Oct 25; Central European Time (CET, UTC+1) from Oct 28 onward. Local start/end time (7–10 PM) stays the same throughout.

    Teaching chemistry outside your primary subject area? You're not alone, and you don't have to figure it out solo.

    Modeling Chemistry for Modelers Teaching Outside Their Field is a 10-week distance learning course designed to build your content confidence and strengthen your Modeling practice, even if chemistry isn't where you started. Meeting once a week in the Fall, this course gives you the time and support to grow at a sustainable pace alongside your teaching schedule.

    Join a supportive network of peers who understand exactly what it's like to teach outside your comfort zone, and walk away with practical, classroom-ready tools you can put to use right away.

    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    This distance learning course prepares teachers to implement the Modeling Instruction approach to Electricity and Magnetism in their Physics classrooms. Participants will experience the Modeling cycle firsthand developing conceptual models through guided inquiry, whiteboarding, and collaborative argumentation before adapting these practices for their own students.

    Content moves through the standard modeling sequence for E&M: electrostatics and the charge model, Coulomb's law, electric fields and potential, simple circuits (current, resistance, and Ohm's law), circuit models (series and parallel), and an introduction to magnetism and electromagnetic induction. Throughout, the emphasis is on how students build and test models through experiment and discourse, rather than on lecture-based delivery of content.

    By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

    • Facilitate Modeling Instruction for E&M topics in Physics
    • Use whiteboarding and Socratic dialogue effectively in virtual and in-person formats
    • Assess student model development through representations (diagrams, graphs, equations) rather than rote problem-solving alone

    LOCATION: The workshop will meet weekly via Zoom.

    DATES & TIME: from Oct 4th through Nov 15th and from Jan 17th through Feb 28th on Sunday evenings (7-10 PM Eastern, 6-9 PM Central, 5-8 MT, 4-7 PT); 3 hours per week.

    Modeling Waves — Distance Learning Workshop
    Spring 2027 | Led by Matt Watson

    Join us for a 30-hour distance learning workshop on Modeling Waves, running Wednesdays, 6:30–9:30 PM Eastern Time, January 6 – March 10, 2027 (with a possible make-up date of March 17 in case of winter weather).

    This synchronous, Zoom-based course is designed for teachers seeking genuine Modeling Instruction professional development in waves — not for those pursuing university credit.

    Recommended: Prior completion of a Modeling Instruction workshop, and access to a second monitor for the best experience.
